Austin Lewis, better known in the calypso world as King Austin was born in 1943
He began his calypso career in 1976, singing with the CDC (Carnival Development Committee) Calypso Tent for one year before moving to the Regal Calypso Tent (RCT) run by the Mighty Chalkdust (Dr Hollis Liverpool), Mighty Duke (Kelvin Pope) and Lord Superior (Andrew Marcano). In 1977, he again moved to another tent before finding a home at Sparrow’s Young Brigade Calypso Tent, then run by Calypso King of the World, Slinger “Mighty Sparrow” Francisco.
King Austin was well-known for his classic calypso and, arguably one of the best calypso songs of all time, “Progress”, a Winsford “Joker” Devine composition, released in 1980. He would place second in the National Calypso Monarch competition that year.
King Austin was known for many calypsos which dealt with societal issues and societal change. Some of his songs include:
Who Guarding the Guards
The World Today is a Ball of Confusion
The World Today
Time is Not Easy in the City
Soca Taking Over

You Can't Please The People
